Are you looking for a quick way to help your child increase their focus and calm their bodies?
In the crazy and busy lives that we live, it’s hard to find the time to calm our bodies and focus on one task at a time. If it is hard for us as adults, it’s even more challenging for our children! I have seen many programs that can help a child focus and calm their bodies but often they are lengthy, complicated and require some training on the part of the parent. When I worked at a private school in Manhattan about five years ago, I was introduced to a program called MeMoves. As this particular school all of the children participated in the MeMoves program before the academic period each day. The children at this school had multiple disabilities and sensory issues and benefited greatly from the program. It only took a couple of minutes, but the children were more focused when beginning academics and the staff felt more relaxed as well.
What is MeMoves?
MeMoves is a program that can help a child increase calmness and focus by combing music, movement and images. It also helps with self regulation and interactive. The program is short (just two minutes per sequence) and can easily be done in the home, in the classroom.
According to the MeMoves website, “MeMoves captures a person’s auditory, visual, motor planning and sequencing, and limbic parts of the brain. Each MeMoves™ sequence is a combination of music, movement and images, utilizing simple, geometric shapes. Organized into three categories; Joy, Focus and Calm, users select one of the 13 sequences on the DVD and follow along (imitate) the actions on the screen”.
MeMoves is excellent to do with a child during transitions (before or after mealtime, before school, etc). You may want to do “focus” before your child goes to school or has a play date with a friend. To learn more about MeMoves, check out their website here.
Who is MeMoves for? The program is excellent for children with autism, sensory issues, ADHD or any other special need. The program is also beneficial for children who are typical. MeMoves can be beneficial for all children because as humans we need tools to help us be more present in our lives and focus our mind on challenging tasks, transitions, etc.
