The Duckling Gets a Cookie by Mo Willems is a funny and entertaining book to read to your child during snack time or mealtime. There is nothing like a chocolate chip cookie! The story is about a duck that interacts with the pigeon about the cookie. The duck tells the pigeon he just asked for the cookie and got it. The pigeon complains that he asks for plenty of things but never gets it (e.g. driving a bus, hot dog parties, etc). I really love this book because it can be used to recall information from Mo Willems other books about the pigeon and also provides a consistent dialog between the duck and pigeon. At the end of the book, the duck gives the pigeon the cookie and he is over the moon. With this book, discuss the conversation that the duck and pigeon are having as well as how the pigeon is feeling about the cookie. Ask your child, “Would you give your cookie to the pigeon?” How would you ask for a cookie?” Also ask, “How did the pigeon feel when the Duck gave him the cookie?” At the end, have your child ask you for a cookie!
Carryover Activity: Make cookies!!! Try this cookie recipe. The recipe is from Nestle House Cookies. The cookies were slightly crunchy, sweet and gooey. Yum!
